Signs your ridges need work
- Cracked or missing mortar along the ridge or hips
- Bits of mortar in the gutters or on the ground
- Ridge caps that rock, sit crooked or have lifted
- Leaks near the top of an internal wall or along a hip line
- Gaps where you can see daylight from the roof space
Rebedding or repointing?
Repointing means applying a new layer of pointing compound over the existing bedding. It's the right fix when the bedding underneath is still sound and only the outer pointing has cracked or weathered.
Rebedding means lifting the ridge caps off, removing the old mortar, laying a fresh bed, refitting the caps and then pointing over the top. It's needed when the bedding itself has broken down or the caps have come loose.
We'll tell you which one your roof actually needs, with photos to show why. There's no point paying to rebed a ridge that only needs repointing, and no point repointing over bedding that's already failed. Read our full guide.
How we do it
- Inspect every ridge and hip and photograph the condition.
- Remove loose caps and old mortar where rebedding is needed.
- Re-lay the caps on a fresh mortar bed, straight and secure.
- Point with a flexible pointing compound that copes with roof movement.
- Clean up and send you photos of the finished ridges.
What it costs
It depends on how many metres of ridge and hip need doing and whether they need rebedding or just repointing. Quotes are free and come with a photo report. See prices.
