Why moss matters
A bit of lichen is mostly cosmetic. Moss is different: it soaks up water and holds it against the tiles, and as it grows and washes loose it blocks valleys and gutters. Blocked valleys are a common cause of water backing up under tiles and into the house.
Auckland's damp climate means moss grows fast, especially on the south-facing side of the roof, under trees, and on older tiles with a rougher surface.
Why we don't water-blast tiles
High-pressure water blasting can damage the surface of older concrete tiles and clay tiles. It can also drive water past the tiles, particularly on older roofs that may not have underlay. It's quick, but it can shorten the life of the roof.
Instead, we apply a moss and lichen treatment that kills the growth. The dead growth then breaks down and washes off with the rain over the following weeks and months, depending on how thick it is.
What's included
- Treatment of all affected areas of the roof
- Removal of loose moss build-up from valleys where it's blocking water flow
- A look over the roof while we're up there, with photos of anything that needs attention
Collect rainwater for drinking? Tell us before we start. You'll need to disconnect your tank while the roof is treated and for a period after.
What it costs
Moss treatment starts from $250 + GST ($287.50 incl. GST). The final price depends on the size of the roof, its height and access, and how heavy the growth is. Pair it with a gutter clean so the dead growth doesn't sit in your gutters.
